IEEE 1588 Time Synchronization in IEC 61850 Infrastructures

TBA

Precise time synchronization of protection relays, synchrophasors and other IEDs in the electric power industry is essential for assured power availability.

With the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) in accordance to IEEE 1588-2008 it is now possible to precisely synchronize such devices via Ethernet. For this application two PTP profiles have been defined. This Video points out the commonalities and differences between the Power Profile (IEC C37.238) and the Power Utility Profile (IEC 61850-9-3). It further on shows what happens if devices set to different PTP profiles are operated in the same Ethernet network.
